Summer months bring hot temperatures, not only outside but on the shop floor too. So, how much water should you drink?
Drinking enough water is key to preventing heat stress and also to help fight fatigue, but how do you know how much water you should be drinking? The general rule of thumb is 8X8, drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Consider this: your body needs about half of its weight in ounces of water each day. So, if you weight 160 lbs., your water intake each day should be 80 oz.
June is Safety Month and typically when temperatures start climbing high in Minnesota. To help our team members out here at Felling Trailers, we handed out water bottles to everyone to help make it easier to drink more water while on the job. Keeping water within arm’s reach and eye’s site at all times makes it convenient and is a reminder to drink up.
Do you need some help keeping yourself motivated to drink enough water each day? Here are a few tips to help keep you on track.
5 tips for getting your 8×8
- Always carry a water bottle, keep one at your workstation, your car, your home.
- Add some flavor, some people say water is blah, it’s boring. Add fresh lemons, limes or oranges to your glass of water to help brighten up the taste.
- Challenge yourself or a co-worker, make it a competition to see who can get the most water each day, set goals.
- Add drinking water to your morning routine. have a glass of water before you or after you shower, and again before leaving the house.
- Want your soda instead? Don’t allow yourself to drink soda until you’ve had at least 2-3 glasses of water. You might find your craving for soda goes away.
Things to keep in mind when factoring in how much water you need a day: how active you are, the climate you live in, your health status, and if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. All of these factors can increase your total necessary fluid intake for the day.

The funny thing about this post is I tried this with a coworker – seeing who could drink the most water. What I ended up with was a conversation with the manager as to why I was away from my office for so much of the day. Completely agree with the idea however! We may have gone overboard. lol
